Routine Inspection

A routine inspection on turnout gear should be completed by each and every firefighter on his or her own gear on a weekly basis. You should look for the following 6 things when inspecting your gear.

• Soiling

• Contamination

• Physical Damage

• Damaged or missing trim

• Loss of seam integrity

• Correct assembly

Advanced Inspection

TurnoutGearRepair.com is trained and capable of completing the advanced inspection process as per NFPA 1851 guidelines which includes testing the outer shell, thermal layer, and the moisture barrier for excessive wear and damage. The advanced inspection should occur at least once every six months by a certified 3rd party and include:

• a cleaning prior to examination

• light evaluation testing on all liners

• leakage evaluation

• physical and thermal damage testing

• label integrity test

• correct assembly

• moisture barrier integrity test

• reflectivity test

Complete Liner Inspection

To abide by current NFPA guidelines, a complete liner inspection should be performed on your turnout gear at least once a year for all gear that has been in use for three years. Again the inspection must be performed by a certified 3rd party and include:

• liner separation to expose hidden side barrier

• required testing on moisture barrier

• evaluation of water barrier

• reconstructing the gear if liners pass testing
